OCTOBER 2006

Our mission is to create a place to call home

for people with developmental disabilities and those who share life with them.

Board Retreat & Workshop Saturday, Oct. 21, 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

You’re invited to join our Board of Directors at their annual retreat.  The goal of the day is to energize members of L’Arche Nehalem Community to help implement our newly created fund development plan and ensure L’Arche Nehalem’s long-term financial viability.  Sr. Guadalupe Guajardo from TACS (Technical Assistance for Community Services) will facilitate the day.  We need as many people as possible to get involved in sharing the good news of L’Arche.  We’ll be meeting in Holy Redeemer Parish’s St. Clare Hall at N Portland Blvd. and Vancouver Ave.  Please RSVP to Susan at 503-251-6901.

LIFE IN THE HOMES

H   Erin Wheeler has been rejoicing in spending more time with her older sister, Shannon, who has recently settled in Portland again after several years on the East Coast.  They have enjoyed eating ribs and going to the zoo, among other treats.

H   At Neahkahnie House, fall activities have included Robyn Dowell soaking up the last of the sun by sweeping the back patio frequently, Cindy Leonard continuing her quest to own the largest CD collection ever, and Rodney Gabriel listening to his albums in the living room.  Ben Miller recently received a new manual wheelchair and looks forward to breaking it in!

THANK YOU!

Y    The Oak Grove branch of Key Bank, which sent a group of volunteers to spend an afternoon at Nehalem House on September 14 doing activities with core members, yard work, and art projects.

Y    Joan Meyerhoff for donating a stationary exercise bike to Nehalem House.

WISH LIST

ü     Marilyn loves to participate in volunteer activities.  Can you accompany her once in awhile?  Please call Nehalem House (254-4558).

When it begins, the community is integrated within the four walls of its house.  But gradually it opens up to neighbours and friends.  Some communities begin to panic when they feel that their neighbours are becoming committed to them; they are frightened of losing their identity, of losing control.  But there are times to knock down the walls of a community.  This is how a small community can gradually become the yeast in the dough, a place of unity for all and between all.
