NEWS

Jerry Deas and Susan Mitchell represented L’Arche Nehalem at the L’Arche USA General Assembly in Cleveland, Ohio, April 20-23. Marilyn Petruzzelli was one of two core-member representatives for our L’Arche Western US Region at the Assembly. (A highlight for her was her first plane ride!) Kate Marshall was also there as a member of the L’Arche USA Zone Board and Joan Mahler as the Western Regional Coordinator.
At the meeting we celebrated and thanked Joan Eads for her eight years of service as the first L’Arche USA Zone Coordinator. Under her leadership we have established our own identity as a new zone and developed relationships and structures to strengthen us to carry out our mission.

We affirmed the new Zone mandate, ratified David Jenkins as the new L’Arche USA Zone Board President, and affirmed the discernment team’s recommendation that Joan Mahler be our next Zone Coordinator. (Joan will continue as Western Region Coordinator through November, 2006, work with Joan Eads during December, and officially become our next Zone Coordinator January 1, 2007.)
Nehalem House assistant Melissa Bixler has announced her engagement to Jacob Florer. They are planning a January 2007 wedding.
Jane Petruzzelli, Marilyn's mom, passed away on April 21. Members of our community joined Marilyn’s family and friends to remember Jane’s life at a Mass held at St. Anthony's Parish on April 26. Please keep Marilyn and her family in your prayers.
Congratulations to former assistant Erin Kelley who is graduating from the University of Portland Nursing Program! Her pinning ceremony is May 9.

LIFE IN THE HOMES

Justin Wilcox (Neahkahnie House) and Lizy Meacham (Nehalem House) transitioned out of their live-in assistant roles at the end of April.
University of Portland student Nicole Hancock will spend the summer with us as an assistant at Nehalem House. She is finishing her sophomore year in the Nursing program at UP.
Cindy Leonard and Diane Dunham enjoyed an Oregon Symphony concert featuring jazz trumpeter Chris Botti last month.

JOURNEYS

Ben Luginbuhl and Adam Richards spent 2 days at Seattle University for the annual Sharing Our Hearts event. They stayed in a dorm room on campus, did arts and crafts and bowled with students, and spoke to a psychology class about L'Arche. They had a splendid time!
Joni Smith is excited about spending several days at the beach in early May with Dan and Amy Barcia and former assistant Sarah Dulaney.
Erin Wheeler is looking forward to a trip to Seattle with Melissa Bixler to attend a Mariners game the first weekend in May. They will stay with the L’Arche community in Seattle.
Members of the L'Arche Nehalem Board will travel to Federal Way, WA for the L’Arche Western US Region Board Formation Weekend May 19-21.
