JULY 2007

Our mission is to create a place to call home

for people with developmental disabilities and those who share life with them.

NEWS

Ì     The newest community in our region, L'Arche Wavecrest in Orange, California, will be staying a few days after Regional Gathering to vacation in the Northwest.  Neahkahnie House will host them for lunch on July 4th.

Ì     Congratulations to Neahkahnie supporting member Lisa Ciranny, who graduated from Mt. Hood Community College's Hospitality Industry program in mid-June.  Lisa's schooling has led to many a delicious meal at Neahkahnie!

Ì     Amy Barcia represented L'Arche USA as a delegate to the Anthropology of L'Arche meeting in Toronto, Canada, June 24-30.  This was a meeting called by Jean Vanier to reflect on L'Arche through the lens of anthropology:  what does living in L'Arche teach us about being human?

Ì     Congratulations to Board President Jerry Deas and Tom Cook, celebrating 25 years of partnership.

Ì     Huge thank-you’s to Meyer Memorial Trust, Conrad Hilton Fund for Sisters, and Special Friends Foundation for generous recent grants which will make possible some much-needed special projects.

LIFE IN THE HOMES

H   Ben Miller has been mastering a new computer game, "Shrek Ogre Bowling."  Thanks to Danny Summerlin for helping Ben get some fun new games on his computer.

H   Erin Wheeler will be going to Camp Kiwanis near Mt. Hood July 22-27.  This is a much-awaited event for Erin each year.  Erin's already joyful face lights up even more when camp is mentioned!  Come by and see her Camp Kiwanis memory book when she gets home.

H   Former L'Arche Syracuse assistant Ann Tacznosky will be living at Nehalem House for the month of July.  Ann has been a friend of the community's for several months and we are grateful for the surprise gift of her presence for a month.

H   Adam Richards and Ben Luginbuhl attended a Portland Beavers baseball game on June 11th.  We're not sure what the score was, but we do know Adam had some mighty tasty chicken, not hot dogs!  Thanks to Tom and Kathy Richards for passing on the tickets.

H   Danny Summerlin, who has been a live-in supporting member at Neahkahnie House since December, will be moving on at the end of June.  We wish Danny many blessings in his future work and thanks for the vibrant energy and dinner conversation he brought to Neahkahnie.

H   Thanks to University of Portland volunteer Eva Wolff, who has been spending many Thursday afternoons out on the town with Marilyn Petruzzelli in the past several months.  Eva and Nehalem supporter Gary Hortsch will be married on July 7.  Congratulations and blessings to you both!

WISH LIST

ü   Vacation home time

ü   House-sitting opportunities for assistants’ days away

ü   Meat thermometer and gas grill for Nehalem House

THANK YOU!

*    Nehalem House discovered an underground water main leak recently.  Many thanks to Phil Stanton, Frank Storm, and others who volunteered many hours to diagnose and repair it.

*    Thanks to two groups of volunteers from the Portland Plunge who helped with yard work, walks and games of catch at Nehalem in June.

*    Thank you to all who participated in the planning, preparations, and attending the L’Arche Nehalem 20th Anniversary Celebration and L’Arche Western Regional Gathering!  So many people shared time and talents to make it a memorable occasion: the 20th Anniversary Planning Committee:  Joan Meyerhoff, Dorothy Coughlin, Eileen O’Reilly-Hoisington, Jean McQuiggin, Tamara Yates, and Erin Weisensee;   Board member Katie McDonald and the PSU Psychology Department for helping sponsor the Regional Gathering;  the Univ. of Portland Volunteer Services Office, for sponsoring and arranging for a generous supporting grant for the 20th Anniversary Dinner-Dance:  Melissa Bixler-Florer, Kristin Rinella, and Tom Freberg; and everyone who helped with the Regional Gathering program, particularly Monica Ranaghan, Seton Orscheln, and Jerry Deas.

In our competitive societies, which put so much emphasis on power and strength, those with intellectual disabilities have great difficulty in finding their place; they are losers in every competition. But in their thirst and their gift for friendship and for communion, the weaker people in society can touch and transform the strong, if the strong are only prepared to listen to them.
