NEWS

We welcome Seton Orscheln to the Leadership Team this month as half-time Community Coordinator. Initially, she will go through the assistant orientation process to get to know core members and assistants and learn about life in the homes. Seton will take over some of the responsibilities Susan Mitchell and Amy Barcia have been carrying as she becomes more familiar with the community. We especially look forward to Seton bringing her experience with the Seattle L’Arche community’s assistant formation program and her study in Marylhurst U.’s Master of Divinity and Applied Theology Program to L’Arche Nehalem. Seton is the sister of our part-time hourly respite worker Annie Orscheln.
Jeff Deeks has found an apartment in the Gateway area near the transit center and Fred Meyer. He plans to move September 17. His sister is working with Community Vision to provide living support for Jeff. We are planning ways Jeff can continue to share in the life of L’Arche Nehalem as an extended community member. Please come to a blessing for Jeff on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m. at Nehalem House.

The process to discern and welcome a suitable person to replace Jeff in the community is nearly complete. Please keep the process in your prayers and watch this space for more news.

Jack Hayter, core member and elder statesman of the L’Arche Noah Sealth Community in Seattle, passed away peacefully August 3rd at the age of 87. He is remembered with great fondness for his wondrous hospitality and uncanny memory for people.

LIFE IN THE HOMES

New assistant Melissa Bixler arrived at Nehalem House on August 19. As mentioned last month, Melissa has just completed her Master’s Degree in Judaic Studies and Ethics at Duke University. With a full complement of assistants in place at Nehalem House, Dan and Amy Barcia are happy to be back at Neahkahnie House. Susan has moved back to Nehalem House.
Monica Ranaghan has completed her year as an assistant and will be transitioning out of the community. She plans to remain in the Portland area. A Blessing and Missioning celebration for Monica is slated for Wed., Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Neahkahnie House. Thank you, Monica! Don’t be a stranger!
Debbie Noonan will be arriving October 1 to replace Monica at Neahkahnie House. She hails from Michigan and is a former elementary school teacher.
Marilyn Petruzzelli and Adam Richards begin Special Olympics bowling this month. Roll a turkey for the Gipper!
