L'Arche: French for "the Ark." Nehalem: a Northwest Native American word meaning "the place where people gather in peace."
|
L'Arche Nehalem is part of L'Arche International, a world-wide network of homes where people with developmental disabilities and those who share life with them live in community. We strive to reveal the unique value and vocation of each person. Growing in wholeness is the outcome of the shared activities of everyday life: communication, work, play, prayer and celebration. By nurturing relationships of mutuality in which people give and receive love, we desire to be a sign of unity, faithfulness and reconciliation. |
|
We strive to create a place to call home for people with developmental disabilities and those who share life with them. OUR GOALS L'Arche Nehalem Community exists to: Provide a safe and nurturing home with long term relationships for those living in community. Provide the experiences and support which each individual needs to live a meaningful and productive life. Change society by choosing to live relationships in community as a sign of hope and love. |

L'Arche began in 1964 in Trosly, France, when Jean Vanier, a French Canadian, felt called to share his life with two men with developmental disabilites. He wanted to create with them a home where they each could live and grow to achieve their full potential.
At this writing, there are 124 L'Arche communities (355 houses) in 30 countries on 6 continents, whose members include 2700 people with developmental disability. These communities are funded locally, but connected through the International Federation of L'Arche.
