L'Arche in the Media
Stories of Transformation
Our impact is felt in our homes in SE Portland and beyond. In our family-style homes, core members (those with intellectual disabilities) are welcomed, received, celebrated and supported to live out their vocations. They in turn welcome and support the growth of assistants (caregivers) and extended community members who begin to see beyond "disability" into the true nature of humanity and vulnerability. L’Arche Portland is a community of love and belonging. Time and again, we see how individuals who do not experience intellectual disability learn from those in our community who do experience intellectual disability. Our assistants and volunteers find the courage to embrace their own vulnerabilities and discover their own gifts through mutual relationships with our core members. Their hearts and minds open as they find themselves welcomed and accepted in powerful new ways.
Beyond offering stable, long-term relationships for the core members and assistants in our homes, L'Arche imparts to the broader community its vision of the unique value of every person, our need for one another, and the transforming power of mutual relationships. Each year L'Arche inspires over 2500 people, including newsletter recipients and over 200 youth group, tree sale, and monthly volunteers. In our 28 years, over 100 assistants who have shared life with core members have taken L'Arche values into their own homes, work places and communities.
