Last year, our vans were 9 and 11 years old, with 86,000 and 76,000 miles respectively and many signs of wear and tear. We reached out to several foundations to secure grant funding towards the cost of two newer vans. We received generous grants from The Collins Foundation, Robert D. and Marcia H. Randall Charitable Trust, The Maybelle Clark MacDonald Fund and L’Arche USA’s Making a Difference Fund. Combined with the sale of our older vans, the grant funds were sufficient to cover the total cost of good-condition, newer vans with very low miles.
Andy Baltz from Atlas Motors, LLC and board member Jerry Deas worked hard to secure the two 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT's. L'Arche Portland took possession of the vehicles with the help of assistant Keeley Terpstra and core member Marilyn Pettruzelli on August 12, and the homes have been driving them ever since.
The vans enable our core members and assistants to participate in the practical, social, and vocational activities that support their individual and collective needs. The vans meet a variety of transportation needs including shopping, appointments, outings, classes/training, and church, as well as participation in regional L’Arche events. This transportation is necessary for our core community members to participate in the life of the wider community, enabling full access to community supports, services and society.
We are grateful to our funding partners!
