L’Arche’s commitment to intentional community means that we must support the emotional and spiritual health of our core members, assistants, and staff. Jean Vanier and others have consistently commented on the “messiness” of living in intentional community. L’Arche Portland is committed to providing opportunities for core members and assistants to retreat, refresh, and bond with each other outside of our daily routines. As important as it is for core members and assistants to show love and care in the smallest of ways throughout the day, it is equally important for each person to have time to reflect, nurture their inner being, and just have fun with each other. Most families we know in our personal lives use vacations and mini-getaways to enjoy "quality time" with their loved ones and refresh themselves from the responsibilities of daily life. Our community is very similar to a natural family, the needs are the same, and the funding of that time away rarely gets to be a priority. L’Arche Portland has never been able to fully support these important shared experiences… until now with this grant.
