Dr. King said\, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” \nIn the spirit of his legacy\, we have an opportunity to answer that question together\, creating a community where everyone belongs\, regardless of ability. \nThis year\, we’ll focus on painting 3 rooms at our Neahkahnie House in east Portland. Volunteers have been helping us freshen up this 30-year-old house\, one room at a time. Today\, we’ll knock out 3 of the last rooms to get a new coat of paint!  \nWe will also have other indoor and outdoor projects available when rooms are drying. Including yard maintenance like raking leaves\, deep cleaning tasks like cleaning furniture\, and spending time with core members (community members with disabilities). \nWhether you’re working on a project or simply being present with our community\, your time and compassion help build a more inclusive\, loving world. \nJoin us in honoring Dr. King’s vision by supporting individuals with disabilities in our community\, lifting each other up\, and strengthening the bonds that make us all stronger together. \nThis MLK Day\, let’s make kindness and service our legacy. \nAge Requirement: Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to participate in this opportunity; any volunteer under age 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone. \nTime slots are 9am-12pm and 1-4pm\, with room for 11 people during each time slot. \nPlease be sure to RSVP via our Hands on Greater Portland post!

DESCRIPTION:L’Arche@UP / REX is a long-standing community of University of Portland students and people with and without intellectual disabilities from the metro Portland area. We build relationships across difference\, and explore spirituality in an inclusive way. \nThis month\, we’ll screen L’Arche Greater Washington DC’s short film\, “On Loneliness” and discuss times when we’ve felt lonely\, and times when we’ve felt like we belonged. \nWe’ll also have coffee and snacks available\, and activities to keep our hands busy – like bracelet-making\, coloring\, and fidgets. \nIn a time when it’s more important than ever to find ways to come together\, we look forward to being with you in this space! \nLocation is Saint Mary’s Lounge on the University of Portland campus. DESCRIPTION:Our community loves “fuzzies”! \nSo as many faith communities will be blessing their pets in honor of Saint Francis\, who held deep love for all creatures – we will also take the opportunity to bless the animals\, the plants\, the sky and earth – and the fellow humans – that surround us! \nYou are invited to bring your beloved pets\, plants\, a photo of a pet who isn’t able to join in-person\, or of a pet who has died. \nWe are partnering with Lincoln Street United Methodist Church for this special time of prayer and celebration. \nThe evening will start out in the Neahkahnie House backyard\, on the east side of Portland. \nThen we will move inside for a potluck dinner! \nRain location will either be pop-up tents or indoors for the entire event. \nPlease RSVP to rsvp@larche-portland.org to receive the Neahkahnie House address\, let us know if you’ll bring a potluck dish\, and anything that might be good to know about animals you might be bringing.
